In the 1970s, an underground urban movement known as "Hip Hop" began to develop in the South Bronx in New York City.  It focused on MC'ing, where individuals would go onto the mic and freestyle a beat.  It was very underground as most of this music was created at house parties, or in someone's garage.  

Most hip hop artists are male, although in more recent years more female's have taken over the scene.  There are some old school female artists too.  Some are listed below:

Conventions-

Typically men are dressed shirtless with chains, baggy jeans and tattoos.  This gives them a bad boy persona.  Women usually wear minimal clothing, maybe a bralette and shorts to make them appear suductive.  They also, like men, tend to wear a lot of jewellery.
