To prepare for my preliminary, I had the song we chose on repeat all day long to really secure the lyrics into my head. As I am going to be wrapping Kanye's entire rap I want to make sure I know all the words so that when it comes to filming I am able to perform perfectly. As this is a bit of a throwback song I haven't listened to it much recently but as I listen to it more, the lyrics seem to come back to me. Listening to the song over and over is helping me to be able to grasp Kanye's tone when he is rapping which will hopefully enable me to be able to mimic his attitude when filming.Thursday, 23 June 2016

This shot analysis suggested to me that depending on the type of music video, the longer or shorter the shots are. In this video which is a more relaxed song, the shots are longer ranging from 1 second to 22 seconds. This made me realise I would have to consider the genre of my video before deciding how long the shots should be. The majority of shots in this music video are close ups, I will consider this when creating my music video. A common theme I have found when analysing music videos is that straight cuts are used from one shot to another.

From this I have learnt that the main way shots are cut from one to another is using a straight cut. This makes the editing look sharp and clean. This music video was quite raunchy and displayed a range of relationships throughout which is typical of this type of music video. None of the shots last longer than 4 seconds which suggests to me that when creating my music video there shouldn't be any long clips. A varied amount of shots were present in the 30 seconds that I studied which suggets to me that I need to cram a lot of differeny styled shots into my music video and change them reguarly.

Preliminary- Location planning
There are various locations throughout the Knock You Down music video. In order to create the most accurate recreation we wanted to find locations that matched those in the video itself.
For these shots, a white background is needed. We decided that we are going to use a green screen for this as then we can insert a plain white background and it'll look sharp and clean instead of attempting to find a perfectly white wall.
Final location- the filming studio in the media block at college.
For these shots, Kanye is sat on a window ledge. We needed to find a window ledge that was firstly low enough to sit on, but also not too high that it could cause a hazard. We found that the window ledges in and around the media block in college would be suitable for this.
Final location- the media office in the media block at college.
For these shots, Kanye is stood looking out the window. There is a long shot of him stood on his on looking out the window as well as later in the music video when he is joined by Keri. We decided that the window ledge we planned to use previously for the sitting down shots would also be suitable to use for these shots too.

Preliminary- Kanye West Ne-Yo Keri Hilson Knock You Down
For our preliminary we had to decide on a music video to analyse shot by shot and then recreate. We were given a range of music videos to choose from and finally my group which included Izzy Humphriss, Tammy Harris and I chose the song 'Knock You Down' by Keri Hilson and Ne-Yo and Kanye West. We chose this song because of the difficulty of it. As there is a split screen throughput the majority of the video we knew it would challenge our ability when it came to editing and we wanted to test ourselves. We analysed a full minute of the music video from 3:00 minutes to 4:05. We didn't think it would be appropriate to analyse the first minute of the video because of the nature of it as we were aware we were going to have to later recreate the video. Izzy analysed the first 20 seconds from 3:00-3:20, Tammy analysed the shots between the timings of 3:20-3:40 and I analysed the remaining 20 or so seconds from 3:40-4:05. We decided this was the most time effective way to analyse the clip we had instead of all doing the whole minute. This worked well. Our analysis involved the type of shot that was used in the frame, the lyrics in the shot and who was singing at this time. This was done to aid us in the construction of our recreation so that everything was cut down into more manageable pieces of information.
Below is the video we are recreating and the shot by shot analysis carried out by Tammy, Izzy and I.
